The much anticipated grudge match between Thor Hushovd and Mark Cavendish on the made-for-sprinters shortest stage of the Tour never materialized - as Alessandro Petacchi put on a sudden burst of power that left Hushovd in 9th and Cavendish in 12th place. The commentators felt Cavendish gave up trying when he saw he could not win the stage. Cavendish has stated, "I go for broke. Win or nothing."  BBC calls the Hushovd-Cavendish rivalry the Tour's phoney war (read the BBC article here).

Julian Dean of Garmin Transitions and Edvald Hagen Boasson of  Sky Pro Cycling were the only two who effectively challenged Alessandro Petacchi for the finish.

Thor Hushovd of the Cervelo Test Team continues to wear the green jersey with 80 points while Mark Cavendish of Team HTC - Columbia is failing to overcome previous set backs and is currently in 36th place with 15 points.  Alessandro Petacchi riding with is currently in 2nd with 70 points. Robbie Mc Ewen of the Katusha team is in 3rd place with 62 points, and  Geraint Thomas of Sky Pro Cycling is in 4th with 56 points.

Canal du Nord in Cambrai
The Canal du Nord, inaugurated in 1965, quickly reached maximum capacity, which led to a new project for a high capacity Seine-Nord Europe canal.

After years of survey, the project received the go-ahead from French and European authorities and will son become reality.

In 2007, the project received 330 millions from the EU and was declared of public interest by France.

The new canal will be a new route for the transportation of goods between France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It is also an enormous asset for the regions it crosses both economically and as a tourist attraction.

It is forecast that 13 to 15 million tons of goods will transit via the canal by 2020. Work on the site is expected to create thousands of jobs.

The biggest of four port sites on the canal will be located in Marquion, 12 kms from Cambrai. (From the Tour de France website)
