Too close for comfort? Disaster waiting to happen? Fans cheer on Kazakh-Astana rider Alexandre Vinokourov at the top of the climb from Mende to the airport - a strenuous 10% climb (11% in places). Vinokourov, who is Alberto Contador's team-mate, finished third, 4 seconds behind Contador. Astana as a team are in third place. Image Credit: Spencer Platt/Getty Images at Yahoo Sport |
They were of to the races today and Astana's Alberto Contador scored an important psychological win over Saxo Bank's Andy Schleck by putting on a burst to the finish that Andy couldn't quite match - thus reducing Schleck's lead in the general classification standings to just 31 seconds. Up to now common wisdom was that Contador would make his bid for gold at the final time trial. But Contador is signalling that the battle might be decided in the Pyrenees where Spanish fans might give him the motivation to get ahead of Schleck. Schleck, however, has other ideas, saying, "I know my best day will come in the Pyrenees. I’m ready to fight."
After the race, Schleck said of La Croix Neuve climb, “I knew this was going to be a really tough climb. “I don’t like this climb, it doesn’t fit me. It’s short and steep and you have to be explosive—not right for the kind of rider that I am. I’m happy I lost only 10 seconds in the end. I was not so surprised I couldn’t stay with him (Contador) in this climb.”
Euskaltel – Euskadi’s Samuel Sanchez and Rabobank’s Denis Menchov maintained their standings, 2 min. 45 sec. and 2 min. 58 sec. behind Schleck.
Fellow Spaniard, team Katusha's Joaquin Rodriguez, edged Contador stage-win glory by edged Contador in a two-man sprint at the finish to win the 210 km. race from Bourg-de-Peage to Mende.
U.S. sprint specialist Tyler Farrar of the Garmin-Transitions team dropped out of the Tour. He had been riding with a broken left wrist since Stage 2. Said Farrar, "...the pain was just too much. I couldn’t push through."
In the team standings, Lance Armstrong's Radio Shack team have moved into first place.
