Spaniard and team Astana's Alberto Contador consolidated his lead over Luxembourger and Team Saxo Bank's Andy Schleck by completing the individual time trial (an individual race to see who is the fastest - every second counts) 31 seconds faster than Schleck giving him a 39 second lead in the general classification standings. At the first time check, Contador was a few seconds behind Schleck but them rode faster in the second half of the time trial.

The real race was for third position - between Spaniard and team Euskatel - Euskadi's Sammy Sanchez and Russian and tam Rabo Bank's Denny Menchov. Menchov passed Sanchez and took a grip on third place.

Barring a tragedy of some kind, these standings should survive the ride into Paris tomorrow. The question for the final stage is if Cavendish will get to waer the green jersey.
